Hormones are messenger molecules that influence the function of cells and tissues all over the body. DHEA and cortisol are the body’s long-acting stress hormones and are antagonistic to each other to some degree. Whereas DHEA has an anabolic or building influence, cortisol has a catabolic or tearing down effect on the body. Both of these effects are essential and these two hormones must be in proper balance for optimal health. How do these hormones become imbalanced? By stress maladaptation.

Stress maladaptation is the body’s inappropriate response to prolonged stress. The normal reaction of the body to stress is to produce greater quantities of both cortisol and DHEA. When the stress is gone, the body reduces its output of cortisol and DHEA to resting levels and everything is fine. This is what happens with short episodes of stress. However, when the stress is prolonged, the body prefers to make increasingly greater amounts of cortisol and less DHEA. How long does it take for this to occur? One study showed that after just 28 days of continuous stress, cortisol levels had climbed to 240 percent of starting values and DHEA had dropped to 15 percent of initial levels! What’s even worse is that even after the stress is removed, the body sometimes does not recover and bring these hormones back to normal levels, but instead, remains in the stress response mode with high cortisol and low DHEA output.

The consequences of elevated cortisol and reduced DHEA levels are devastating: The immune system is compromised with increased risk to infections, certain cancers, allergies and autoimmune diseases. Glucose utilization and insulin function are altered with resultant higher blood sugar levels. Salt and water are retained, producing tendency toward high blood pressure. Blood cholesterol and triglycerides increase and predispose to heart disease. Thyroid function becomes impaired, resulting in decreased metabolism, lowered body temperature, and reduced vitality. The body stores fat, especially around the midsection. Depression, insomnia, hunger, and PMS result. Reproductive function falters with resultant infertility and cessation of the menstrual cycle. The body becomes more susceptible to toxins and heavy metals. Stomach ulcers form. Memory and learning become impaired. The combination of reduced R.E.M. (rapid eye movement) sleep and lowered growth hormone release at night diminish mental and physical regeneration, which results in acceleration of the aging process. Protein synthesis is reduced and protein breakdown is increased, leading to bone loss, skin wrinkles, arthritis, muscle loss and weakness, and all the protein supplements in the world won’t make a difference. However, resistive exercise (like bodybuilding) can maintain muscle mass under these conditions by “stealing” protein from the internal organs. Obviously, this is not healthy. An additional strike against endurance athletes is the fact that insulin-sensitive, slow oxidative type 1 muscle fibers become replaced by fast glycolytic type II-B muscle fibers, resulting in poor performance. Not all of these effects of high cortisol and low DHEA occur in everyone. What does happen in each individual is dependent upon genetic predisposition and lifestyle/environmental factors.

When DHEA levels are low, supplements should be taken for several months. When another saliva test has shown that DHEA is back in normal range, the supplements are gradually tapered off and followed by another test about a week after stopping supplementation. This is done to assure that the body has recovered and is again making DHEA on its own.

For those who are not concerned with health but take DHEA for reasons other than restoring levels to normal, beware of excessive and/or prolonged use causing or contributing to: nausea, headaches, acne, liver tumors, atherosclerosis, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, male breast growth, uterine fibroids and polyps, endometriosis, cystic breasts and ovaries, male pattern hair growth in women, spotting, and breast tenderness. The adrenal glands may atrophy and some people on thyroid replacement therapy will become hyperthyroid as the DHEA makes the medication more active.

Very little is known about the safety of the supplements or the effects of long-term use. Some laboratory studies in cancer cells and animals have suggested that pregnenolone may stimulate the growth of hormone-responsive cancers such as prostate and breast cancer. The body uses pregnenolone to make steroid hormones such as DHEA and testosterone. High doses may cause aggressiveness, irritability, trouble sleeping, and the growth of body or facial hair on women. It also may stop menstruation and lower the levels of HDL, or “good,” cholesterol, which could raise the risk of heart disease. Other possible side effects include acne, heart rhythm problems, liver problems, loss of hair from the scalp, and oily skin.

Little is known about drug interactions, although some studies suggest it may interfere with the action of certain sleeping medicines or calming medicines (benzodiazepines). Always tell your doctor and pharmacist about any supplements or herbs you are taking.

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use pregnenolone. Relying on this type of treatment alone and avoiding or delaying conventional medical care for cancer may have serious health consequences.

What is milk thistle?
Milk thistle is a plant whose fruit and seeds have been used for more than 2,000 years as a treatment for disorders of the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder. Milk thistle is native to Europe but can also be found in the United States and South America.

The medicinal ingredient found in milk thistle is silymarin, an extract of milk thistle seeds. It is an antioxidant that protects against cell damage. Silymarin contains 4 compounds: silybin (the most active), isosilybin, silychristin, and silydianin. Most research has studied silymarin or its major compound silybin, instead of the plant in its whole form.

The botanical name for milk thistle is Silybum marianum. Milk thistle is also called holy thistle, Marian thistle, Mary thistle, St. Mary thistle, Our Lady’s thistle, wild artichoke, Mariendistel (German), and Chardon-Marie (French).

What is the history of the discovery and use of milk thistle as a complementary and alternative treatment for cancer?
The ancient Greeks and Romans used milk thistle as a treatment for liver ailments and snake bites. During the Middle Ages, milk thistle was recommended to treat liver toxins. Modern homeopathic practitioners have used compounds from milk thistle seeds to treat a range of disorders including jaundice, gallstones, and peritonitis. The German Commission E, which studies the safety and efficacy of herbs for the German government, recommends milk thistle for liver damage due to toxins, cirrhosis of the liver, and as a supportive therapy for chronic inflammation of the liver.

Despite milk thistle’s long history of use for liver complaints, it was not until 1968 that researchers extracted silymarin from milk thistle seeds and suggested that it might be the plant’s active ingredient. Silymarin was later discovered to be a mixture of flavonolignans, a family of plant-based substances with antioxidant effects.

What is the theory behind the claim that milk thistle is useful in treating cancer?
To research the claim that milk thistle is useful in treating cancer, its active substance silymarin and its major compound silybin have been the most widely studied ingredients.

Silymarin and silybin may protect the liver against damage from toxic chemicals by blocking toxins from entering the cell or by moving toxins out of the cell before damage begins.

Silymarin and silybin have been studied in the laboratory in cancer cells as well as in animal tumors of the tongue, skin, bladder, colon, and small intestine. They have been tested for their potential to:

Make chemotherapy less toxic.
Make chemotherapy more effective.
Stop or slow the growth of cancer cells and block tumors from starting or continuing to grow.
Help to repair liver tissue.
How is milk thistle administered?
Milk thistle is usually taken by mouth in capsules or tablets. Since it does not dissolve well in water, it is not commonly taken as an herbal tea. In Europe, the active compound silybin is given by intravenous infusion as the only effective antidote for Amanita phalloides, a rare mushroom toxin that causes deadly liver failure.

Most milk thistle supplements are measured by how much silybin they contain. Special forms of silybin made to be easily absorbed and used by the body are sold under the names Legalon, silipide, and Siliphos.

Have any preclinical (laboratory or animal) studies been conducted using milk thistle?
Research in a laboratory or using animals is done to find out if a drug, procedure, or treatment is likely to be useful in humans. Preclinical studies are done before clinical trials (in humans) are begun.

Silymarin, the active substance found in milk thistle seeds, has been studied in laboratory research. These studies have shown that it acts as an antioxidant by:

Strengthening cell walls to prevent toxins from crossing into the cell.
Stimulating enzymes that make toxins less harmful to the body.
Blocking damaging substances called free radicals from attacking cells.
Silybin, the major compound found in silymarin, has been studied in laboratory experiments using cancer cell lines (cells adapted to grow in the laboratory). These studies show that silybin:

May help cisplatin and doxorubicin (chemotherapy drugs) work better against ovarian and breast cancer cells.
May have direct anticancer effects against prostate, breast, and cervical cancer cells.
May slow down cell growth, as shown in prostate cancer cell lines.
In laboratory tests using rat livers, silymarin and silybin have also been found to boost the regrowth of liver tissue.

Tests on colorectal cancer cells transplanted into mice found that silybin given twice a day decreased tumor growth.

Have any clinical trials (research studies with people) of milk thistle been conducted?
There is 1 case report describing the use of silymarin in a patient with promyelocytic leukemia who required breaks in chemotherapy due to abnormal liver enzyme levels. During 4 months of treatment with silymarin, the patient had normal liver enzyme levels and was able to undergo chemotherapy without breaks. A second case report describes a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma whose symptoms improved when he took 450 milligrams of silymarin per day, without anticancer therapy.

A randomized clinical trial in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia found that silymarin decreased the harmful effects of chemotherapy on the liver without working against the cancer treatment. The children taking silymarin needed fewer chemotherapy dose reductions because of side effects than the children who did not take milk thistle.

A number of clinical trials have studied milk thistle or silymarin in the treatment of patients with hepatitis, cirrhosis, or disorders of the bile ducts. These trials have used a wide range of doses with mixed results. In a trial of biologic therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis, patients taking silymarin had fewer symptoms and a better quality of life compared to patients not taking silymarin. The beneficial effects of silymarin shown in some studies suggest it might play a role in preventing hepatitis and/or liver cancer, but no clinical trials have studied the use of silymarin for prevention.

Have any side effects or risks been reported from milk thistle?
Very few bad side effects from the use of milk thistle or silymarin have been reported when taken as recommended. Several large, carefully designed studies in patients with liver disorders have found that taking silymarin may rarely have a laxative effect or cause nausea, heartburn, or stomach upset. At high doses, mild allergic reactions have been seen (more than 1,500 milligrams a day).

Silymarin has been used in pregnant women who have a bile blockage in the liver, with no toxic effects to the patient or fetus. Silymarin have also been given to children intravenously for mushroom poisoning.

The following information was posted on the national cancer website. Milk thistle is part of our Livdetox.

It is not known if milk thistle may make anticancer medications or other drugs more effective, less effective, or have no effect when taken with them.

Is milk thistle approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as a cancer treatment in the United States?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved the use of milk thistle as a treatment for cancer or any other medical condition.

Milk thistle is available in the United States as a dietary supplement. Because dietary supplements are regulated as foods, not as drugs, FDA approval is not required unless specific claims about disease prevention or treatment are made.

Given the limited research done with milk thistle in patients with cancer, using it as a cancer treatment cannot be recommended except in carefully designed clinical trials.

polysaccharide (a type of carbohydrate) that is
derived from citrus peels and pulp. Regular citrus
pectin molecules are long chains of highly branched
glucose molecules, which are too large and complex
to be absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.
Pecta-Sol™ modified citrus pectin has undergone a
unique manufacturing process that renders the pectin
molecules shorter and less branched than regular
citrus pectins. This special process ensures the lowest
degree of methylation with a molecular weight within
a specific range of 10,000-20,000 daltons. Low
methylation increases the number of galactosyl
binding sites, thus enhancing the intensity of Pecta-
Sol™’s immune supporting benefits.
The shorter, unbranched chains of modified citrus
pectin optimize its reliable absorption, bioactivity,
and utilization of its important polysaccharide
components.
The pH of Pecta-Sol™ modified citrus pectin is
within the preferred range for maximum activity.
Pecta-Sol™ modified citrus pectin is rich in
galactosyl residues, the key component thought to
confer modified citrus pectin’s health benefits.
Galactosyl residues interfere with the binding of
galectins, a type of protein on the surface of cells.
Galactosyl specifically interferes with the
carbohydrate-binding galectin 3, which has been
identified on prostate, breast, colon, brain, skin,
lymphatic, and larynx cells. By interfering with
galectin binding, galactosyl interferes with
undesirable cell-cell interactions, thereby exerting
unique assistance to the immune system.INDICATIONS
Pecta-Sol™ Powder may be a useful dietary
supplement for those who wish to support their
immune system, with specific focus in the prostate,
breast, colon, skin, lymphatic system, larynx, and
brain.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment present in most plants and aids in manufacturing food for the plants through a process known as photosynthesis. Over the years, chlorophyll has been used by physicians as well as laymen to do away with bad breath and also to lessen the pungent smell of urine, feces and wounds infected by bacteria or fungus. It is important to note here that chlorophyll possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant as well as wound healing properties. These remedial qualities of chlorophyll have made it popular among the people since ages.

Chlorophyll is not only found in plants, but also in some algae and even in some bacteria that can soak up sunlight that is essential for photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is found in abundance in the plant leaves and is also often present in some other plant tissues or parts like the stems and imparts the green color to the plants. The chlorophyll present in the leaves is camouflaged by other pigments as well. This is proved from the fact that during the winter chlorophyll present in the leaves declines and the leaves change color owing to the prevalence of the other pigments. Primarily, chlorophyll absorbs violet-blue and orange-red light emitted by the sun.

Generally, chlorophylls are large molecules that mostly comprise carbon and hydrogen. A single magnesium atom encircled by nitrogen-containing group of atoms called a porphyrin ring can be found at the center of each chlorophyll molecule. The arrangement inside a chlorophyll molecule bears a resemblance to that of the dynamic ingredients of hemoglobin in the blood. A long and uninterrupted chain of carbon and hydrogen atoms carries on from the core of the chlorophyll molecule and links it to the internal casing of the chloroplast – the cell organelle where the process of photosynthesis occurs. When a chlorophyll molecule soaks up a photon of light, electrons present in the molecule become active and move to higher energy planes. In turn, this kicks off a series of complex chemical reactions in the chloroplast enabling the energy obtained from the sunlight to be stored in chemical bonds.

Interestingly, there are several kinds of chlorophylls and each of them is at variance with the other. They also differ in their molecular structure and absorb somewhat diverse wavelengths of light. Among these, the most common type is the chlorophyll a – this comprises almost 75 % of the chlorophyll present in most green plants. Chlorophyll is also present in cyanobacteria, which was earlier known as blue-green algae. The green pigment can also be found in more composite cells. In fact, chlorophyll is an associate pigment that can be found in green plants and other complicated photosynthetic cells that absorb diverse wave lengths of sunlight and transmits them to the chlorophyll for eventual alteration into chemical energy. Some chlorophylls that are of lesser significance are also found in some micro-organisms.

Going by the history, in earlier ages people used chlorophyll to heal gastro-intestinal ailments like constipation. Chlorophyll was also widely used to boost formation of blood cells in people suffering from anemia. Some introductory studies conducted on chlorophyll also indicate that the green pigment found in plants may also be beneficial in detoxifying substances that lead to cancer or cancerous growth.
