It is getting warm and with the recent rain here in northern Wisconsin, we have misquitoes and ticks, along with many other bugs. There are many plants that naturally repel bugs, and are not harmful to humans or animals. I make two natural bug repellent products. One is an oil based product to be used topically in situations where you want to have longer term covereage, hunting, on animals, hiking, etc. The second form is in an aerosol product which is lighter, and sprays easily on surfaces, cloths, skin, etc.
The main plant oils I like to use are time tested and do a pretty good job of keeping those pests away so we can enjoy our outdoor activities. One plant that seems to work even on those black nat flies that like to bite your ankles and eat at your pets ears is Neem. The neem plant has many medicinal uses. The neem leaves are used for malaria and parasitic worms. The juice from the crushed, fresh leaves is used in ointment and pastes for eczema and ringworm. The leaves are also used in household insecticides, and in library books as a pest prevention.
I combine neem with essentials oils of eucalyptus, cedar wood, lemon grass, tea tree, citronella, geranium, and others to create a balanced and potent bug repellent.
